Despite South Korea's economic achievement and democratic consolidation, Korean Studies as a chapter of Area Studies and Social Science have been under-studied compared to Japan and China studies. This can be attributed to the lack of the discipline's efforts to compile the diverse academic achievements in various areas of Korean Studies. Moreover, Korean Studies have also lacked interdisciplinary approaches to reflect upon South Korea's history, language, politics and art history.
This volume brings together top Korean specialists around the world in such diverse issues as methodologies on area studies, democracy, history, philosophy and art history. All the contributors in this volume probe various aspects of Korean Studies and provide a multi-dimensional and up-to-date portrait of Korea in the 21st century. Each chapter provides unique and original ideas on how to approach Korea from Area Studies perspective, how Korea's democracy has evolved, how intra- and inter-national identity are being shaped in and around the Korean peninsula and how Korean art have been used as a medium to reflect Korean mindsets.

지난 반세기 동안 한국이 이룩한 눈부신 경제 성장과 성공적인 민주화는 세계의 주목을 받기에 충분한 것이었다. 그러나 한국이 정치와 경제 분야에서 이룩한 눈부신 성과에 비해, 한국학이 세계의 지역 연구에서 차지하고 있는 위상은 주변의 중국학이나 일본학에 비해 상대적으로 낮았다. 그것은 기존의 한국학 연구가 이 분야에서 이루어진 학문적 성과들을 체계적으로 종합하려는 노력을 기울이지 못했기 때문이다. 더구나 기존의 한국학 연구는 한국의 역사, 언어, 정치, 문화를 심도 있게 성찰할 수 있는 학제적 토론의 장을 갖지도 못했다.
이 책은 한국학 분야의 세계적 석학들이 민주주의, 역사, 철학, 예술사 등의 분야에서 이룩한 연구 성과를 성찰하고 토론할 수 있는 장을 마련하기 위해 기획되었다. 이 책의 저자들은 각자의 전문 분야에서 한국학의 연구성과들을 다면적으로 진단함으로써, 한국학이 지향해야 할 21세기의 새로운 한국상을 입체적으로 제시하였다. 특히 이 책의 저자들이 논의하고 있는 지역연구로서의 한국학, 한국 민주주의의 공고화, 한국의 정보산업과 경제발전, 한국인의 해외 이주와 대내외적 정체성 형성, 역사와 영토분쟁, 한국의 문화예술 등은 21세기의 한국학 연구가 지향해야 할 독창적인 쟁점과 방향을 제시하고 있다.
